The Monroe County Board of County Commissioners approved on Apr. 20 a series of events and activities to celebrate the United States’ 250th anniversary as part of the America 250 initiative throughout the Florida Keys. The planned festivities will run from May through November and are intended to highlight both the nation’s milestone and Monroe County’s unique culture and history.

America 250 Florida Keys aims to bring together residents, visitors, local organizations, and businesses in community-driven celebrations that foster pride and showcase the region as a historic destination connected to America’s broader story. Funding and logistical support for these events are being provided by Visit Florida Keys/the Tourist Development Council (TDC) through its unappropriated fund balance.

The celebration will begin with a Paddleboard Proclamation event on Monday, May 4, at Old Wooden Bridge Marina on Big Pine Key from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., coinciding with National Travel & Tourism Week. During this event, Monroe County Mayor Michelle Lincoln will sign a proclamation while standing on a paddleboard. The public is invited to join in “business meets Keys casual” attire with their own boards. The kickoff will also feature live music, local food trucks, and a conch horn call.

Other scheduled activities include an American flag display along U.S. Highway 1 by local businesses for Flag Day on June 14—with community partners bringing out large flags—and keeping them up during Flag Week if possible. On June 27, Key West will host a Duval Street Parade ending at Truman Waterfront with an America-themed party. Additional July Fourth events organized by local rotaries and chambers are also encouraged as part of America’s birthday celebrations across the county.

Further plans include September events in Key Largo; an October sunset celebration at Old Seven Mile Bridge; and in November, hosting the traveling New York-based September 11 memorial exhibit alongside drone shows in Islamorada (Nov. 17) and Big Pine Key (Nov. 21). More details about each event will be released as planning continues.

Residents are encouraged to participate not only by attending but also through volunteer service projects or storytelling efforts highlighting how the Florida Keys have contributed to American history.
