Monroe County Fire Rescue, Veterans Affairs, and Parks and Beaches announced on April 10 that the public is invited to participate in a Murph workout at Big Pine Key Community Park on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25. Registration will begin at 8:15 a.m., with the workout starting at 9 a.m.

The event is organized to honor Lt. Michael Murphy, a U.S. Navy SEAL who died in Afghanistan in 2005. Organizers say all fitness levels are welcome to join the workout.

Participation in the event is free of charge, but donations will be accepted for the Key West Military Affairs Committee through their website at www.keywestmac.com. A participant waiver is required for those taking part.

Weighted vests and red, white, and blue attire are encouraged as Monroe County begins celebrations for America’s upcoming 250th anniversary.

The Murph workout has become an annual tradition in many communities across the country as a way to pay tribute to fallen service members while promoting fitness and community involvement.
