Rep. Carlos A. Gimenez, U.S. Congressman representing Florida’s 28th district since 2021, posted a series of statements on social media criticizing the Venezuelan and Cuban governments and voicing support for new sanctions against Cuba.
On May 1, 2026, Gimenez condemned comments made by Venezuela’s ambassador during a recent flight to Caracas, stating: ” I unequivocally condemn the disgraceful statements made by Venezuelan Ambassador Félix Plasencia during yesterday’s American Airlines flight to Caracas.
Later that day, he commented on newly imposed sanctions targeting Cuba’s security apparatus: “The newly implemented sanctions against the Cuban regime are necessary to target its security apparatus—the machine that jails political prisoners and oppresses its people.
Anyone who props up this tyranny will face serious consequences.
We must end this repressive regime that”.
On May 2, 2026, Gimenez followed up with a brief post reading: “CUBA IS NEXT! “.
Gimenez was born in Havana, Cuba in 1954 and has lived in Miami for much of his life. He previously served in the Florida House of Representatives and on the Miami-Dade County Commission from 2005 to 2011 before being elected to Congress in 2021. He graduated from Barry University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Public Administration degree.
The U.S. government periodically imposes sanctions on foreign regimes accused of human rights abuses or undemocratic practices. In his posts, Gimenez echoed longstanding criticisms of both Venezuela and Cuba regarding political repression and imprisonment of dissidents.
