ISLAMORADA, VILLAGE OF ISLANDS: Learn About Your Flood Risk

Islamorada, Village of Islands issued the following announcement on Jan. 29.

To ensure all Monroe County residents have the opportunity to review and discuss the newly released Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) with coastal mapping experts, FEMA Region IV is hosting six Public Flood Risk Open Houses throughout the county during the week of January 27, 2020.  

All residents, property owners and business owners in Monroe County and all municipalities within the county are encouraged to attend one of the Public Flood Risk Open Houses to learn about their flood risk, view the newly updated preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs), and find out how the information may impact their property.  

The preliminary FIRMs show local areas at risk of flooding, including required elevations for new construction or structures that are improved greater than 50 percent of their value, as well as boundaries of areas that are considered likely to experience wave activity in a storm that have different requirements for structural building. The maps, once effective, will also help determine flood insurance costs.   

At the Flood Risk Open Houses, attendees will receive one-on-one, property-specific support from engineers, insurance specialists, members of the mapping team, and representatives of the local jurisdiction. The specialists will be available to answer questions about flood insurance, engineering, and more. All Islamorada residents (home and business owners, renters, realtors, mortgage lenders, surveyors, and insurance agents) are encouraged to attend whichever Flood Risk Informational Open House is most convenient. Islamorada Floodplain Managers and the Floodplain Manager from the City of Layton will be on site to answer questions at the Open House at Founders Park in Islamorada.  

The Open Houses will take place at the six locations below. Residents do not need to attend the Open House in the jurisdiction where they own property. PLEASE ATTEND WHICHEVER OPEN HOUSE IS MOST CONVENIENT TO YOU.

Appointments are not necessary; drop by anytime in the three-hour window. Those planning to attend should bring their elevation certificates, if possible.

By law, federally regulated or insured mortgage lenders require flood insurance in areas at high risk of flooding typically covered by a separate flood insurance policy. Visit www.floodsmart.gov or call 1-888-379-9531 for more information about flood insurance and to locate a local agent.
