Monroe County School District recently issued the following announcement.
Construction at Sugarloaf School is underway for the new elementary wing that will house students from VPK through second grade. The official groundbreaking ceremony was
held Monday with dignitaries and school students, parents, and staff on hand for the official event. Principal Brett Unke welcomed those in attendance and thanked the Monroe
County School Board for the project that will provide a state-of-the-art facility for their youngest learners. Superintendent Theresa Axford shared her remarks that included
appreciation for the school staff and parents who have been involved with the planning stages of the project. The highlight of the event for the students, each donned with an Ajax
hard hat, was the remote control shark car races made possible with the donation of the specialized cars from Ajax. Ajax Building Company provided large Tonka trucks,
customized with MCSD and Sugarloaf Shark logos, to set the stage as dignitaries took their shovels and broke ground, tossing the dirt to signify that construction is underway.
Members of the school advisory council and planning team then dug their shovels in for the project that also includes renovations to the office area. Students are currently housed
in portable classrooms until the completion of the project that is anticipated to be in the spring of 2023.
