Late Rally at Lynn Comes Up Short for Men's Basketball

The Barry University men's basketball team dropped its fourth straight with an 87-85 loss on the road to the Fighting Knights of Lynn University in Sunshine State Conference (SSC) action Saturday afternoon at the de Hoernle Sports & Cultural Center in Boca Raton, Florida. Freshman Nordin Kapic hit the game-winning layup with three seconds left to play to lift the Fighting Knights after Malik Stanley had tied the score for the Buccaneers.

The victory improves the Fighting Knights overall record to 4-11 and their league record to 2-8. The win is the second-consecutive SSC win at home for Lynn. Barry slips to 6-8 overall and 2-7 in conference action.

All-Time Series: Buccaneers lead, 33-27, but Lynn ends a five-game skid against Barry and wins for the second time in the last 13 meetings.

SUMMARY:

  • 1H - Barry led by eight, 18-10, following a three-pointer from Nick Anderson with 13:33 showing in the opening half. All five Buccaneer starters were involved in the scoring in the first six minutes.   • 2H - Jimel Lane led off the second half with a dunk for Lynn's largest lead, 11 points. Jaron Williams had a layup and Nick Anderson made three successive free throws. Anderson added a three to cut the deficit to five, 53-48, before Kapic had a layup and Esteban Lluberes hit a three to get Lynn back to a double-digit advantage. OT Delancy's putback layup got Barry back within five before Kapic had two free throws and a jumper while Jalen Gilmore had a layup. Barry trailed by 11 (66-55) with 12:28 remaining. Back-to-back baskets for Barry and a three-pointer with 5:51 left in regulation helped the Buccaneers pull to within two, 72-70. Lynn tried to pull away as junior Braxton Bartlett hit a three-pointer at 3:32 for a 79-72 lead. Barry collected a 6-0 scoring run to knot things at 81 with just under two minutes remaining. Ballard hammered a dunk and Kapic hit two free throws as the Fighting Knights grabbed an 85-81 lead. Barry made one final push for the lead with two layups, the final with five seconds left, that tied the contest at 85. On the ensuing inbounds, Bartlett launched a pass to the Barry free throw-line where Kapic caught it and converted a contested layup for the game-winner. | Lynn 87, Barry 85
NOTEWORTHY:

  • Kapic totaled his eighth double-double of the season with 31 points and 11 rebounds.
  • Freshman Jimel Lane added 13 points and five rebounds.
  • Evans came off the bench to score 14 points with four three-pointers.
  • Gilmore finished with nine points, eight assists and six rebounds.
  • Anderson had 22 points on six of 12 field goals including 5-for-7 from long range. He made all five free throw attempts including tying the game at 81-all.
  • Stanley's layup tied the score at 85-all and he finished with 21 points.
  • Jaron Williams and Tyler Hawkins both finished with 12 points.
  • James Montgomery had a team-high eight rebounds but the Buccaneers were beaten on the boards, 37-to-26.
ON THE HORIZON:

Barry hosts Palm Beach Atlantic University on Wednesday, January 18, at the Cesar Odio Court inside the Health & Sports Center on the Miami Shores campus (7:30 p.m.).
