Do not call 911 to report fireworks

9

Monroe County Sheriff's Office recently issued the following announcement.

Please help us spread the message: The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office 911 line is intended for residents to report immediate emergencies, not to report the use of fireworks.

Sheriff’s Office 911 Communicators are routinely overwhelmed by non-emergency fireworks calls during holidays, which inundate Deputies on patrol and impact response times on more serious calls.

Please only call 911 if there is an immediate safety issue or injured person.

Note: A law signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis in 2018 states that shooting fireworks is not a state crime on the following days: Dec. 31, Jan. 1 and July 4.

Nonetheless, it’s best to leave the fireworks to professionals.

Have a safe and fun New Year’s Eve! Please help keep the Keys clean and safe for everyone.
