Carlos A. Giménez, a U.S. Congressman representing Florida’s 28th district, expressed support for former President Donald Trump’s policies regarding sanctions on countries allegedly involved in trafficking Cuban doctors. Born in Havana, Cuba, Giménez has been a member of Congress since 2021, succeeding Debbie Mucarsel-Powell. He previously served in the Florida House of Representatives and Miami-Dade County Commission.
On April 7, 2025, Congressman Giménez shared his stance on social media regarding what he described as "modern-day slavery" linked to the trafficking of Cuban doctors. He stated, "BREAKING —> For too long, countries trafficking doctors from #Cuba have engaged in modern-day slavery. I support President Trump’s tariffs & all countries trafficking in Cuban doctors MUST FACE the FULL WEIGHT of US Tariffs!"
Following this message, Giménez reiterated his call for action later the same day. In another post, he insisted on applying high-pressure tariffs on nations involved in these practices. He wrote, "ÚLTIMA HORA —> Estoy solicitando a la Administración Trump que se le apliquen ARANCELES DE MÁXIMA PRESIÓN a todo país que esté traficando médicos cubanos y pagándole a la dictadura de #Cuba para el trabajo forzado que le obligan a hacer a estos esclavos modernos. #PatriaYVida".
Concluding his series of statements on the issue, Giménez called for economic sanctions against countries complicit in the alleged modern slavery of Cuban doctors. His post read, "#SOSCuba ARANCELES Y SANCIONES ECONÓMICAS PARA TODO PAÍS QUE ESTÉ TRAFICANDO A MÉDICOS CUBANOS. ¡NO HAY TREGUA CON LOS CÓMPLICES DE LA ESCLAVITUD MODERNA! #PatriaYVida".
